The title of this painting is taken from a traditional children’s song. The theme of flight is reinforced by the image of a bird on the Japanese screen in the corner of the room. The artist was confined to a wheelchair following an accident in 1900. Poignantly sentimental images featuring children were a feature of mid-Victorian art but continued to be popular well into the twentieth century.
