The subject of this painting was owner of the Spode company but had many other outside interests and official roles. Copeland is shown in a formal pose in a style suitable to a former Lord Mayor of London. The reference to President in the title refers to his position as President of the Bethlem Hospital. Each President was featured in a portrait commissioned by the hospital. By the late 20th century there was a surfeit of these large portraits owned by the hospital and they were offered for sale to interested parties.
