Born in Bordeaux, Benassit lived in England during his youth and exhibited occasionally at the Paris Salon from 1870. He was an engraver and caricaturist as well as a genre painter. This scene of French dragoons and infantrymen in the snow was probably inspired by an event from the Franco-Prussian War, possibly the retreat of General Bourbaki's army to internment in Switzerland in January 1871.
