This genre scene is exemplary of the work of the Belgian painter Louis Antoine Carolus, who trained in France and the Netherlands before becoming a director of the Musée de l'Antiquité in Brussels. A young woman dressed in blue taffeta is reprimanded by her companion, who has just intercepted one of her letters. The minute rendering of the setting and the attention to the texture of the fabrics are characteristic features of Carolus's paintings. His depiction of this conventional bourgeois interior has a dramatic quality which is possibly owed to his experience as an illustrator and printmaker.
