The scene depicted is a platform at Paddington Station in London. A large and disparate group of people are assembled, with the train and coaches behind. The group with young boys in the foreground are Frith and his family. An arrest is also being made, the police officers are based on two real policemen called James Brett and Michael Haydon, and the bearded man is an Italian refugee nobleman. This is one of several small replicas of the large painting at the Royal Holloway College.
