The view is from the bank in the foreground, looking at the pond in the background through two saplings at the water's edge. To the left is a wooded lane; it is more heavily wooded on the right. It might be sunset, and the sunrays appear to make the water a reddish-salmon colour. The donor, Ruth Edwards, née Escombe (1832–1907), was the artist's wife.
