A monument to John Playfair, Chair of Mathematics and later Philosophy at Edinburgh University and President of the Astronomical Society of Edinburgh. A projecting base plinth supports a podium plus a blind colonnade of fluted Greek Doric columns, and entablature with laurel leaves and a pyramidal stone roof.
