William Brooker was born in Croydon, attending the School of Art there before continuing his studies at Chelsea and Goldsmiths College. From 1949 to 1953 he taught at Bath Academy of Art in Corsham. He lived for a time with Brian Wynter and later with Terry Frost.

One of his pupils was Howard Hodgkin, who described him as ‘a great teacher’. He moved on from Corsham to posts at other prominent art schools before becoming principal of Wimbledon School of Art in 1969, a post he held for 12 years.

Brooker painted in oil, particularly interiors and still lifes. This painting, from its unusual perspective, has elements of both these subjects. It was painted in 1953 while he was working at Bath Academy of Art. Brooker’s work has been likened to Walter Sickert’s with its similar palette and subject matter.
