Regular travel and day trips on Clyde steamers were popular in the nineteenth century and often the easiest way of getting to and from Glasgow. Merchants had fine houses built on the Rosneath Peninsula which they and their families, complete with servants, would move for the summer. The merchants themselves would commute to Glasgow’s Broomielaw using the steamer and rail connections.

F. C. B. Cadell was one of four artists known as the Scottish Colourists who often used bright colours and pronounced brushwork in their paintings. Whilst he is best known for his paintings of Iona and the socialites of Edinburgh, this is a rare example which features a boat.
