Neil MacPherson studied at the Glasgow School of Art, then moved up to Caithness in the north of Scotland, where he has found inspiration in the light and space of the landscape. He has also been influenced by the stories and folklore of the area, and explores links between the tangible and imaginative world in his paintings. The paintings are often full of symbol and spiritualism, using bright colours to create solidity. Celtic spirituality often appears in the form of animals, in this case the birds on the shoulder of the figure. The painting shows the angel stationary and deep in thought with the colours of heaven fading as if a distant memory.
