Transcript of unidentified newspaper cutting in the collection's archives reads, regarding this work: "This is a large, finely designed, and admirably executed painting representing the opening ceremony of the Great Exhibition of 1851 in the presence of the Queen, the Prince Consort, the Duke of Wellington, and many others, whose portraits are clearly recognisable, that of the Archbishop of Canterbury, who officiated at the religious part of the ceremony, being especially so. It would seem, indeed, from its historical importance, almost as if this work would find a fitter home in a public gallery than in a private collection."
