In 1900 the artist, Malcolm Macdonald, enrolled in the Glasgow School of Art. He had been brought up in Stornoway with parents who were both from Uig. On completing his studies in Glasgow he went on to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He then returned to Lewis where he lived and worked until he emigrated to Canada in 1909. He was one of the earliest trained visual artists of the Western Isles.

This painting shows a seascape with breaking waves. The artist’s father was a boat builder and throughout his life he continued to show a strong attachment to the sea, ships and his native Gaelic background. He was nicknamed ‘Mara’ (Sea) because of his love of all things Gaelic and maritime.
