The glow of the Underground station alludes to the subterranean nightlife that continues as London sleeps, the last people quietly heading home. Doitch’s figures appear secret, even ghostly, and his urban settings often have a haunted quality. Viennese by birth, Doitch came to England in 1938 after the annexation of Austria and trained at St Martin's School of Art. Interned between 1940 and 1941, on release he worked in a munitions factory, later studying at Camberwell School of Art after the war. In 1951, he went on to the Royal College of Art, but returned to Camberwell to teach. Doitch’s subject was the dereliction of post-war London, which he depicted in intense, small canvases. He also made many figurative drawings, paintings and pastels, and was a talented etcher.
