The suburban landscape of West London was a favourite subject for Carel Weight. Here we see the view from a Victorian villa in Putney. Across the green is a row of new houses and paling fences cordon off patches of land – perhaps for gardens or more new buildings. In the street the people of Putney, both young and old, go about their business. The few parked cars are a sign of the impact that car ownership was about to have on the urban scene.
