This painting depicts the hotel, as it appeared pre-Second World War. It was demolished in 1972. The hotel was in possession of the Guild of St Mary and St Margaret in 1548, but may be much older. It was a coaching inn with rear courtyard and galleries staircase. The sheriff of Middlesex was bidden to hold his court there from 1750. From 1828, the owner also ran a butcher’s shop from a hut built to one side of the Inn. However, the business became separated when Mr Crookall took over the Butcher’s and Mr Hoar, the 'George Inn', in 1906. In 1907 there was a bowling green, accommodation for cyclists and large tea gardens for weekend trippers from London. In the 1930s, Ruislip was a popular suburb, and to meet the needs of an affluent middle class, the 'George' was demolished and rebuilt.
