The hortus conclusus (enclosed garden) was a common feature in medieval iconography, though it is unusual to find a nativity set in it. Usually the Virgin and Child playing with flowers, or the Virgin and a unicorn inhabit the protected garden which, from Persian miniatures, suggests paradise. The infant Jesus is attended by three angels, winged and naked infants. The figures in the niches are, from the top left: the angel of the Annunciation, Saints Anthony and Francis; right the Virgin, Saint Jerome and a martyr.
