This painting illustrates Judges V, 28 from the Bible: 'The mother of Sisera looked out at a window, and cried through the lattice, 'Why is his chariot so long in coming? Why tarry the wheels of his chariots?'' Sisera was commander of the Army of Jabin, King of Canaan and oppressor of the Israelites. He was routed by Barek and treacherously slain by Jael, wife of Heber the Kemite, an ally of Jabin, in whose tent he had sought refuge. Fanny Eaton (1835–1924) modelled for several artists associated with the Pre-Raphaelite circle.
