Horsley painted versions of this work at least three times; another example is in the collection of the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. Victorian audiences may have questioned the morals of the woman who is gazing vainly at herself in the mirror whilst opening Valentine’s letters which she then allows her lap dog to maul in disregard for her suitors. The sentimental nature of his works earned him a high degree of popularity and his commentaries on Victorian courtship and other issues were well-suited to the contemporary market.
