Edward Le Bas studied art briefly in Paris, and then from 1924 at the Royal College of Art. He was a member of the London Group of artists and an Associate of the Royal Academy from 1942, becoming a full member in 1953. The building in the centre of the painting is the Misericordia Abbey, (meaning 'Heart of Mercy') which is situated in the Cannaregio district of Venice. The abbey was designed by the Italian architect and sculptor Jacopa Sansovino (1486–1570).
