The work tells the story of the legend of Saint Winefride who had her head cut off by her jilted suitor, Caradog. But her uncle, Saint Beuno, replaced it and she made a full recovery while water sprang from the place where her head fell. Known as the Lourdes of Wales, Saint Winefride’s Well has been a place of pilgrimage since the seventh century. The base depicts the well while Saint Beuno’s crosier, or staff, rises from it depicting his converting North Wales to Christianity. Caradog’s sword is also incorporated in the design. The sculpture was designed after workshops with local school children and around the base are included bronze casts of their artwork on the theme of 'Our Town'.
