This is a dark and painterly representation of a miner wearing a helmet and lamp. The artist was born in the coal mining village of Penygroes, near Ammanford, Carmarthenshire. He attended Llanelli school of Art (1956–1958) and Swansea College of Art (1958–1961), and was later Head of Art and Design at the Central School, Milford Haven. He taught there for 18 years before resigning to follow his interest in designing and building boats.
