Eshu, the messenger god, is represented with an ornate curved head, in the shape of a medicine bottle. Such wooden pieces would usually have had cowries hanging from them, which acted as a fly-whisk. The leather wrapped around the base of the sculpture may have contained paper with verses from the Koran.
