William Holt Yates Titcomb was a member of the ‘Newlyn School’ of artists who worked in Newlyn in Cornwall at the end of the 1900s. They depicted the life of the local fishing community, often working out of doors in the manner of the French Impressionist painters.

In this beautiful large-scale painting Titcomb plays with subtle effects of light and shade, leading our eyes away from the central group who are in shadow, to the group behind, who are illuminated by light coming through the window. Titcomb also enjoys showing the differences between the old weather-worn Mariners and the fresh features of their youthful students.
