The work faces north west and is an 'open' male figure on 'look out' standing in a depiction of a boat. The structure stands on a square plinth, the sides of which are decorated in a pictorial mosaic with various maritime motifs. The whole is on a traffic island surrounded by a low perimeter fence. The sculpture was designed by Tideway School pupil Darren Woodley who won the competition to design a sculpture to reflect the town’s maritime history. Darren and his friend Craig Marsom helped local firm G. W. Ironworks to turn his winning design into reality. Many local people, both young and old, helped to make the mosaic plinth for the sculpture at a series of workshops led by local artist Carol Havard, including one at the Fish Festival at the end of May.
