The figure represents a First World War infantryman, wearing a steel helmet, striding forward, bearing his rifle (formerly with a fixed bayonet) in both hands before him. The figure was originally erected in front of Matear and Simon's Cotton Exchange, mounted on a pedestal and standing before a wall plaque bearing a long list of names of those employees of the Cotton Exchange who had died.
