Alethea Garstin was the daughter of the Newlyn School artist Norman Garstin, whose charming portrait of her as a four-year-old is also in Bristol Museum and Art Gallery's collection. She spent her life in Cornwall but travelled widely, painting her small and vivacious pictures on the spot. This station is at Cashelnagor, County Donegal. She considered that her paintings looked anachronistic hung alongside abstract work in the galleries of Newlyn and St Ives and much admired the freshness of modern painting.
