Probably copied from a print, this painting would have been a good opportunity for Branwell to practise using chiaroscuro effects, depicting the different ways in which the light from the boy's lantern falls on his face. A link-boy was someone who ran ahead of a horse-drawn carriage carrying a lantern to light the way ahead. This painting hung for many years in Ponden Hall, Stanbury, near Haworth, home of the Heaton family. It is believed to have been presented by Branwell to the Heatons as a token of friendship.
