Lieutenant Robert Hampton Gray RCNVR ('Hammy' Gray) was Senior Pilot of 1841 Squadron, Fleet Air Arm. On 9 August 1945 he led eight Corsair aircraft on raids over Japan. As he flew over the bay of Onagawa Wan, a Japanese destroyer, close inshore and camouflaged, fired on his squadron. Gray flew low over the ship and dropped two bombs. The destroyer sank, but Gray's Corsair caught fire and crashed. He was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his action.
