This copy of the artist's own original painting of 1915 accurately depicts a number of Canadian and British soldiers who were present at the landing in France. The original painting hangs in the Senate Chamber in the Parliament Buildings, Ottawa, Canada.

When the First World War broke out in 1914 all Dominions of the British Empire, including Canada, were called upon by Great Britain to fight on behalf of the Empire. Canada's sacrifices and contributions to the war enabled the country to become more independent.
