Outside the library in Maryport a figure holds a wick up to a streetlamp, suspended in his duty and concentration. This is 'The Lamplighter', an apparently life-size metal sculpture by local sculptor Colin Telfer.

Clad in an oversized coat and cap, with gloved hands, the man is a snapshot of an age past in the small Cumbrian town, before men and flame were replaced with electricity and automation. Telfer is known for his delightful sculptural scenes of ordinary life in the area, and 'The Lamplighter' is no exception, pleasing the viewer with its air of sentimentality and nostalgia.
