The ‘Lady Alice Kenlis’ was a steamship built by J. & R. Swan in Maryhill, Glasgow and launched on 23rd December 1867. It was designed by Hercules Linton whose most famous ship was the sailing clipper ‘Cutty Sark’ (1869), now preserved at Greenwich. That is of teak over an iron frame but ‘Lady Alice Kenlis’ was of unusually heavy full-iron construction for loading and unloading in shallow water, including lying aground. From 1868 it carried cattle, goods and passengers between Northern Ireland, Scotland and England, and was later also briefly used as a ferry. Renamed ‘Holman Sutcliffe’ it was converted into a suction dredger in 1913 until partly dismantled in the 1930s or early 1940s and abandoned on the tidal foreshore of the River Deben, within what is now the National Trust’s Sutton Hoo estate at Woodbridge, Suffolk. The lower hull still lies there and in August 2023 was given protection as a scheduled monument by Historic England.
