The artist explains the story behind this work: 'On 16th May 1931, some forty visiting aircraft flew into Reading Aerodrome for the official opening of Reading Aero Club’s new clubhouse. As part of an afternoon flying programme, a Ladies’ Handicap Race was held over a triangular course of approximately 10 miles, starting and finishing at the airfield, with the spire of St Paul’s Church in Wokingham and Twyford Railway Station acting as ‘marker beacons’. The best known of the nine pilots in the race was Amy Johnson, who had leapt to international fame the year before when she flew solo from England to Australia in a de Havilland Moth similar to those in the painting.'
