This is a view of the Upper Hall of the Painted Hall of the Royal Naval College, Greenwich, towards the end of its life as the National Gallery of Naval Art (or 'Naval Gallery'), 1824-1936, after which the paintings, sculpture and other items from the Greenwich Hospital collection that it contained were transferred to the care of the new National Maritime Museum, over the road. The end (west) wall to the right shows Thornhill mass portrait of the family of George I and the glass case, with viewers looking at it, holds Nelsonic silver and other display items. Portraits of William III and Mary II the Royal founders of Greenwich Hospital (later the RNC) hang on either side of the arch, with Thomas Kirk's statue of Admiral Sir William Sidney Smith below Mary and Patrick Macdowell's of Sir Edward Pellew, Viscount Exmouth under William.
