Edward Stott was born William Edward Stott at Quarry Hill, Wardleworth, Rochdale, later becoming known by his middle name to differentiate between him and fellow artist William Stott of Oldham. Edward Stott’s father Samuel was a mill owner and twice Mayor of Rochdale. He expected his son to follow him into business and as such Edward was educated at Rochdale Grammar School and the King’s School, Ely. Subsequently he spent five years working in an office before he was able to start training as an artist and gained no support from his father in this regard. Stott began his artistic career studying at Manchester Academy of Fine Arts where William Stott of Oldham was also a student and then in Paris firstly at the studio of Carolus Duran and then at the Ecole des Beaux Arts.
