This traditional subject was revitalized in the Counter-Reformation period. God the Father is enthroned in the heavens and surrounded by cherubim and the dove of the Holy Spirit is poised above the crucified Christ. This painting is a small, freely-handled copy, dating from the mid or late seventeenth century, of Reni's painting for the high altar of S. Trinità dei Pellegrini, Rome, commissioned by Cardinal Lodovico Ludovisi in 1624 and completed in July 1626.
