There is some debate about which battalion is depicted in this painting. It is likely to be the 2nd Battalion, training in Glasgow before being sent to the West Indies in 1759. This painting is of exceptional interest as a representation of the workings of an infantry battalion of the period, likewise for its panoramic depiction of contemporary Glasgow. It may be that this painting is one of the few that depicts the old Glasgow Green wall. The wall no longer exists and Greendyke Street, along the north of the Green, lies in its place.

The painting was bequeathed to the officers 2nd Battalion The Black Watch by Captain Alistair Hamilton Younger of Skene in 1947.
