This tiny painting shows a view in the Forest of Fontainebleau. As early as 1826, Rousseau worked in the forest, painting oil sketches en plein air – outside, directly from nature. From about 1836, he rented a studio in the nearby village of Barbizon, working there throughout the summer and then spending his winters in Paris. One critic praised Rousseau's paintings because he found them 'simple, calm, permeated with naturalism' and because the artist 'respects the accurate relation of trees, animals, man and sky'. This tiny painting was much appreciated when it found its way into the Glasgow collection of James Donald. He proudly exhibited it at the major international exhibitions held in Edinburgh in 1886, and Glasgow in 1888 and 1901.
