This painting by Maurice Sochachewsky shows the great actor-manager, Meier Tzelniker, starring in a play at the Grand Palais theatre in the 1960s. Yiddish theatre became popular in London following the mass migration of Jews from Eastern Europe at the end of the nineteenth century. The Grand Palais staged productions in Yiddish, the language of Eastern European Jews, for more than 40 years.
