This works depicts the parable of the Good Samaritan (Saint Luke 10, 30–37), who helped the man left for dead by thieves, after his plight had been ignored by a priest and a Levite. Painted in Paris in 1846, its subject matter subscribes to conventional Salon taste, but utilises contemporary rather than biblical costume. The flickering quality of the brushwork and rich colours recall the small costume pictures of Delacroix. Gwendoline Davies (1882–1951) purchased this work in 1910.
