Powerful British image of a professional goalkeeper in front of a massive crowd.

It has been suggested that this could be an impression of Simeon ‘Sam’ Millington playing at Stamford Bridge, home of his club, Chelsea FC. Millington was renowned for his wide-brimmed cap and played for the Pensioners from the mid-1920s to the early 1930s. Although the artist has taken liberties with the kit colours, the socks’ hooped design are in keeping with Chelsea’s at the time. Likewise, the artist appears to have reimagined somewhat the old east stand of Stamford Bridge, save for the middle gable and ‘Gatling Gun George’ Hilsdon weathervane at its apex.
