This painting is one of a series of imaginative paintings known as the ‘Enchanted Gardens’, created soon after Mostyn moved to Torquay. His style changed dramatically after his move south. He may have been influenced by the seaside light and the Italianate villas and gardens which were so popular in the town at that time. This splendid example uses paint thickly applied by a palette knife.
