The artwork takes its subject from the traditional fable of the 'Gingerbread Man' using themes from children’s stories and rhymes. Following the fable, the two-part carving depicts the Gingerbread Man crossing the river on the tip of the fox’s nose, while the chasing pack, comprising the horse, pig, cow, and old lady, come to a sudden halt at the water’s edge. While the tiny Gingerbread Man is cast in bronze, the animals are all carved from a very dark Irish limestone. The overall shape of each block remains visible, while the individual animals and figure are identified by variations in surface texture, ranging from the heavily gouged to the smoothly polished. The bronze Gingerbread Man has been removed.
