George Ainscow has lived in Rochdale for most of his life and after attending Rochdale College of Art he became a textile designer in a Manchester studio. Ainscow believes that his background as a designer has influenced his style. In 1867 Edward Lear (1812–1888) visited the lakeside village of Varenna and made drawings of the gardens at the Villa Cipressi. A great admirer of Lear, Ainscow travelled to Lake Como in 1981. During this time he visited Varenna, noted for its beautiful gardens, and spent an afternoon in the gardens of the Villa Cipressi where he made detailed sketches with colour notes. On his return to Rochdale, he produced this small painting from his sketches.
