Folding fan, the sticks and guards decorated with silver piqué and mother of pearl plaques. The leaf is painted on the recto with the Old Testament story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, surrounded by animals, both domestic and wild. In the distance, a winged angel approaches carrying the serpent that will soon convince Eve into eating an apple from the forbidden tree, an act which led to the expulsion from Paradise. In the eighteenth century, fans decorated with Biblical subjects struck a pious note and were, therefore, considered appropriate to carry in certain social settings such as church services.
