Saint Augustine, one of the Four Fathers of the Latin Church, is seen writing 'The City of God'. The presence of the child refers to the story when Augustine remarked to a child how futile it is to try to fill a hole in the sand with water. The child apparently replied 'No more so than for human intelligence to fathom the mystery you are meditating.'

He was born at Tageste in Numidia (Tunisia) and was baptised by Saint Ambrose in Milan in 387. He was Bishop of Hippo (near Annaba, Algeria) from around 396. His life and its conflicts are set out in his 'Confessions', written in 400.
