In a busy Parisian square young and old gather together. Behind them a cartoon-like horse, pulling a heavy carriage, struggles up the hill. It is possibly a view of the Place de Clichy in Paris. Although inspired by something seen, Picasso painted this work from sketches in his studio. He uses just a few strokes of paint to capture the chubby child playing on ground – most of the child's head is just the bare cardboard. Picasso was only 19 years old when he painted this work. Despite the busy children there is a sadness about this painting – the dominant colour is a cold blue. By eliminating detail the young Picasso suggests a timeless message – the passing of youth.
