Millet, who trained in France and travelled to England and Holland, studied the work of Poussin and made his reputation with classical landscapes in his manner, the chronology of his paintings is difficult to establish. Here he depicts a typically richly varied landscape, with a scene from the Iliad where Aeneas, leader of the Dardanians (allies of the Trojans), and one of the few not killed in battle or enslaved when Troy falls to the Greeks, gathered a group, collectively known as the Aeneads, who then travel to Italy and became progenitors of the Romans.
