Signed Laura Johnson, this picture was painted in Staithes, Yorkshire, shortly before the artist's marriage to Harold Knight in 1903. Staithes was a relatively small artists' colony, but the Knights knew and made friends with artists such as the Scot, Charles Mackie and the Impressionist painter from Oldham, Fred Jackson.
