In 1959 Joseph Appleyard was commissioned by Doncaster Museum & Art Gallery to produce a painting of that year’s St Leger as a way of commemorating the golden jubilee of the museum service. This painting was the outcome of that commission.

Appleyard spent most of his working life in Leeds where he worked as an illustrator on one of the local papers as well as teaching painting and drawing at the college. He also taught cake decoration at the same college. Appleyard died after falling off a bus as it went round a roundabout.

The 1959 St Leger was won by Cantelo.
