Walter Richard Sickert was born in Munich in 1860. His mother was English and his father a Danish artist. In 1868 his family settled in England. Sickert went on to become a painter, printmaker, teacher and critic and was one of the most important figures of his time in the British art world. Sickert lived in Dieppe, Northern France from 1898 to 1905 and at this time almost exclusively painted scenes in and around the town.
